THE UPSIDE OF 2020

 img

When you say the year 2020 most people shudder and say I am glad it's over. Things were definitely a bit challenging and different this year…. but let's take a look at some of the benefits. There was a record numbers of people getting out in nature and visiting their local recreation spaces. Parents got to spend their lunch break outside playing catch or soccer with their kids. Dogs that normally stay home all day accompanied their families for walks around the neighborhood. Drive in movies had a comeback. Homemade bread and meals have become commonplace as families have less driving, to eat up their time. We learned to value and appreciate frontline workers, even more. La Madrona was blessed to be able to continue programs in Tennis, Swim and After School Recreation. Stretching, lifting weights and sweating outside, where the air is fresh and the view is uncompromised, has become the new norm. Our November and December Uplift trees were filled with blessing and gratefulness written and displayed by our members, young and old. Most importantly there was an increase in kindness, courtesy, looking into each other's eyes and coming together as a community. I feel blessed to be part of the La Madrona family!

We are happy to announce that we will once again have our wonderful after school program. Our new session will start on January 4 and will run for 4 weeks until January 29th. It is offered from Monday through Friday from 1pm to 4pm. You can register your child for one or more days a week to accommodate your needs. Our program offers an introduction to tennis from 1-2pm with our tennis instructor Will. Your child will start to develop his/her hand/eye/racquet coordination as well as the basic agility, balance and coordination needed for tennis. Our 2-4pm time will be filled with activities like swimming (weather permitting), arts and craft, and a multitude of fun games all happening rain or shine due to our outdoor tent on court 1. The 2-4pm activities are run by our camp counselor Grace and every single one of our campers love her.

Don't miss out on your chance to have your child join us! We make sure we keep them moving and engaged while always practicing the safest Covid protocol demands from our county.

Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions

We hope to see your little ones this January!

TENNIS UPDATE

Hello Members,

I am hoping that the sight of 2021 brings you a sigh of relief and some hope on the horizon. We are not out of the woods with this pandemic just yet but it seems like we have a chance that 2021 will be a better year. I wish each and every one of you for this new year, more and better tennis.

As we start this new year, our tennis programming is still on the uphill and we hope to keep adding more and more clinics and opportunities to play, practice and get better. All of our regular programming will start again on this Monday January 4th. Remember to register early for all of our clinics since we are capping our attendance to 6 players. Our Junior Academy is also starting this week and we still have availability in all of our classes. Our Winter Junior Academy runs from January 4th to the end of March. For all of our juniors, be on the lookout for the start of our Play Days. Play Days will offer all of our players, regardless of their ability, a chance to play actual matches and a chance to develop their match play skills.

With all of this programming and tennis being a great socially distant sport, we have seen a rise in our court reservation. Not only are our courts busier, but we allocated court 1 to a tent to allow for our fitness group classes to operate and give more outdoor spaces for our fitness enthusiasts. And because of it, we have heard from many of you that it is quite difficult to reserve some courts at certain times of the day. We hear you and understand the importance of this issue. We want you to know that this situation is also temporary due to the pandemic. However, we have made a first step towards helping this situation. From now on, every member will be able to reserve court 3&5 the day prior by calling our front desk or making the reservation online. That means that all 6 courts are now available for reservation. Courts 2-4-6-7 are available 7 days prior starting at 6am and court 3-5 are available the day before starting at 6am. We will also be proactive in opening any court we use for our junior academy lessons if our class numbers are needing fewer courts. We understand that this still limits availability from the 4-6pm, but ask for your patience and cooperation as we do our best to make as many courts available as possible at any time of day.

Because of this pandemic and the new resurgence of tennis, we will re-address our court reservation policies. You can find our current policies on our website under the tennis tab. We will have our newly amended policy up on the website and available at our front desk by the end of the week. Here are a few things we will emphasize;

  • Reservation of 1.5hr max (any single or doubles play is only entitled to 1.5hr. A group of 4 players may not reserve extra time under the name of another player in the group)
  • Stricter court audit for no shows, cancellation or players booking extra time resulting in a charge for breaking rules
  • A change in cancellation policy to allow for leeway in rebooking the court.

We hope that these changes will help in maximizing our court usage and help each and every one of our tennis players get more time on the courts. We know these changes will take some adjustments and we will, through a better court audit, help remind each player of the new policies.

Finally, I hope for all of us that this upcoming year gives us a chance to get back to our normal tennis activities with more social events and more chances at some competitive tennis. In the meantime, you know how to get in touch with me if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. Please don't be shy, I am always open to your feedback.

In the hopes to see you all on courts soon,

Cheers,
Fred
